Painter / Teacher / Student of Life
My artistic practice draws from the perspectives of historical masters while incorporating a modern viewpoint. Inspired by these classical techniques, I aim to evoke the emotions conveyed by the subject, allowing viewers to experience a sense of nostalgia through a contemporary lens.
I primarily work with oil paints to achieve the depth and effect I seek. However, I explore photography and watercolor to expand my ideas. My creative process begins by observing people around me and letting their energy inspire me. I start with rough thumbnails, refining compositions based on how the model presents themselves during sessions. After creating a rough layout with a thin wash, I work in sections, bringing the piece to life. A painterly style allows the medium to be appreciated, keeping to the realism that makes my subject their own.
For example, in my painting ‘Devon,’ I was captivated by the depth of history in his eyes, which led me to position him in a way that suggested a connection to the past while incorporating modern elements like the white hoodie, reminiscent of an Elizabethan collar. The lighting and pose were initially my vision, but Devon’s presence transformed the piece, reflecting his personal experience within the environment. This dynamic interaction between my perspective and his self-expression likely played a role in the painting being recognized in international competitions.
With my art, I strive to capture the light within people’s auras, highlighting how darkness accentuates that light. I’m drawn to themes of duality, where opposites enhance each other. This dichotomy is central to my work, especially in painting people, their energies, and their connection to their environments.
